Reflection Statement:
I designed the box and objects to visually convey life, and more specifically, the preservation of nature. For the box, I wanted to create a asymmetrical crack surrounded by gold edges to represent the healing process of life while also adding a plant-like structure poking through the gap, bringing viewers further into the piece. As a viewer opens the box, we see a dirt colored area underneath with pieces blocking in the 3 objects to convey hardship to preserve life. The 3 objects then represent what we are trying to preserve, starting from nature, then to humans with an urban environment, all preserved in food-like containers to represent preservation more clearly and the idea of doing all we can to save earth.

Notes:
The movie the box is inspired by is Wall-e and the theme of preservation.
For the box, I wanted to make it seem like a combination between homemade and natural, using natural tones and textured structures to emphasize the theme of earth. After finding the containers, I created dioramas that would fit into them, all crafted with paper, cardboard, and string to fit the mood of each diorama. At the end of the project, I realized how interesting it was to make dioramas and hope to make more creations like this one in the future.

Reflection Statement:
  • The sculptures visually communicate the idea of rot and time.
  • While exploring ways to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on patches of paper seemingly gluing everything together to fit what I feel is Gregor's room.
  • I decided to include a clock, representation of Gregor, because his time was cut short and he was a working man.
  • I felt the work was not producing the results I wanted while doing the cutting and folding process to attach pieces of furniture, so I went with using paper mache (clumped paper and water) to attach everything together.
  • I want to keep exploring ways to use paper in sculptures.
  • I want to learn more about ways to represent themes and ideas.
  • The piece allowed me to explore the restrictions of materials and how much you can achieve with it.
  • The making of this work exposed new ideas in a clearer way, like paper mache.

Reflection Statement:
  • The three sculptures visually communicate different structures in the body that all have major roles in how we live.
  • While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on stability because each sculpture need to be structurally sound to be able to function.
  • I decided to include a minimum amount of color as the main structure is the focus, using color to enhance rather than distract, which was done with everything except Ribs.
  • I felt the work was not producing the results I wanted when I was working on the Skin, as in the beginning I wanted to make a structure that seemed to balance from sharp stalactite pieces that later developed into what it is now for a better and more complex structure.
  • I want to keep exploring the skeleton and skin process the most as it seems like the most flexible process to make things with.
  • I want to learn more about ways to connect sculptures to make a more complex piece.
  • The piece allowed me to explore how to create sculptures with a minimum amount of materials
  • The making of this work exposed new ideas such as the skeleton and skin process, my favorite idea, while also showing other ways to use tape and glue.
